Personally, I think the internet also has its downsides...
Like that guy who threw a dog of a bridge... probably wouldn't have done it if his mate wasn't recording it so they could put it on youtube.
And show how 'cool' they are to the www.

Discuss.

People like that just look like fools.

I think the internet has made the world a better place, Multi-Million dollar companys that everyone relies on irl day to day have come from a few people on the internet sending emails back and forth with ideas or in a chat room.

Also you can find any information you need with a few clicks, Like that "Did You Know" video states, there are something like 4 billion searches on Google every month, who answered these before Google/Before the Internet?

Re: Has the internet made the world a better place?

In all honesty and thinking straight, i say yes.

Most useful sites on the internet:
Google
Yahoo Answers
Yahoo
Wikipedia
Ebay
Amazon
Pornhub (Ooops, how did that get there?)

Without the internet, many people would still be clueless, all fortune 500 companies mostly exist and still exist because of profits on the internet.

Of course like everything that's good, bad people have to "TRY" and corrupt it. (Child Porn, killing, dangerous stuff like making bombs, etc.)

However, the government and most of the main websites on the internet for this activity are making moves to get rid of this.

I say Yes.
The good site:
News get fast like hell around the world. Example: Plane landed in Hudson which got over the world through Twitter.
You can still be connected to people even if they move to the ass of the world.
Free projects to increase the knowledge of the world i.e, Wikipedia.

The bad site:
Pirating
Child porn
Viruses and (D)DoS
:holmes:

The Internet (intentionally with a capital I as the spell-checker tells me) provides very much entertainment for anyone using it. Computers were intended to be machines doing your calculations for you but early developments on arpanet and everything were done in the 60s for a network. So basically computers and international networks (not known as internet for a long time) started their development at the same time. Networks were never intended to involve regular people sharing or discussing on it - not until ARPANET became for public usage, TCP/IP protocol was developed and in 1990 World wide web was "made".

People benefit from structural database storing (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.) when working. People benefit from the Internet by sharing information, receiving it and getting entertained. It has made the world a much better place - quicker coverage of international news, contacting your buddy across the globe in a second, etc.

The incidents involving Internet such as 11 year old boys getting ideas on suiciding on 4chan and then doing it is just a small factor. All those can be avoided without shutting the net down.

Wasn't that in Latvia? O_o Because it was a huge drama here with some people throwing rocks at the Latvian embassy windows.

Filesharing and P2P connections are good indeed. However pirating equals stealing, but everyone still does it. And I do it, and there's nothing wrong about it as far as I see. Copyright is overrated, companies like BREIN, IFPI, MPAA, RIAA and those should just shut down.

Re: Has the internet made the world a better place?

All the companies cracking down on pirating are just bored looking for something to do and a way to get more money, because thats all anything is about anymore.

Re: Has the internet made the world a better place?

The internet has made a few people neck themselfs, is that a good thing?

Edit: not the internet it'self, but the dickheads that use it.

Re: Has the internet made the world a better place?

I'd also like to add that the way you think about this depends a lot of which generation you are...
For example; your opinion and your grandparents' will be different.

People who don't use it their-selves, and only hear bad stuff about it, well they think bad about the internet.

It's easy to use the internet for terrorists..
They can easily manage their bombings..
It's also easy to use the Internet for people in free and totalitarian countries alike to organise protests and reach goals that they could not through other means.

Terrorist use the air to communicate as well. Their throats make vibrations that vibrate the air, which the ears of the other one pick up. They are able to communicate quite easily through that.

Has it made the world a better place? Fuck yes. Communicating is easier, information is shared quicker, the problem is that people are too reliant on it. If it ever should shut down, we're fucked.

Re: Has the internet made the world a better place?

^ what Stybar said. We've become so reliant on the Internet and technology as a whole that if the whole thing goes down, we're screwed.
Thankfully, I believe the only way to screw the Internet would be a global blackout.
