After talking to Donald for a while about the current SEO status, mobile-friendlyness, and other aspects of the forum I started to look up other, more modern forum software. My search has ended with Xenforo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XenForo

Features that SMF doesn't offer include:
  • Two-step verification
  • SEO friendly urls
  • Retina support
and a lot more.

Fortunately Donald has had past experience with installing this software. The only tricky thing will be migrating the database with all posts, topics and users to the new system.

Some forums that use the Xenforo system today:

https://www.se7ensins.com/forums/
http://forums.everythingicafe.com/
http://www.ign.com/boards/
https://rmsmotoring.com/forum/
https://www.racedepartment.com/forums/

And of course there are some nice mobile friendly themes available as well:

https://www.themehouse.com/xenforo/2/themes

This looks pretty neat! So you are you guys planning to switch soon then?

Should be really soon, as soon as Donald has some free time :D

Will be interesting to see! Are the themes moving over as well? Or will it be a complete reskin?

Yeah same skins won't be possible since it's an entirely new framework. We'll probably go with the default theme at launch, and I'll start playing with it immediately. If I fail to come up with something nice fast enough I'll probably go with something like this:

Looks like the transfer will begin next Monday as Donald is really busy until then.
We're gonna have to install Xenforo 1.5, migrate SMF to that version, and then upgrade that version to 2.0 (2.0 doesn't have importers unfortunately)
Hopefully the process won't take multiple days.

It'll all probably be done within a day, if everything goes right.

Really looking forward to bringing TMS up to speed. I feel like you guys will definitely enjoy the new forum software.
