Pilot did an insanely good job, and nobody got hurt bad, I'm really impressed.
Also this dad being cool the entire time ensured the rest of the passengers not freaking out.

Its good that they survived, but why did he land in the snow? Why not at least try the roads/check if the roads had any cars on them.

Probably because power lines are pretty much invisible when you're in the sky.
Hitting them would not be a pleasant feeling.
Also road signs.
