NYC Proposes Raising Minimum Age for Cigarette Purchases to 21

MTCkvww.jpg

Young New Yorkers would not be able to buy cigarettes until they were 21, up from the current 18, under a proposal advanced Monday by Dr. Thomas A. Farley, the city’s health commissioner, and Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker.

The proposal, which would give New York the highest smoking age in the country among major cities, is the latest effort in a long campaign to limit smoking that began soon after Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg took office, with bans on smoking in restaurants and bars, and expanding more recently to bans at parks, beaches, plazas and other public places.

The new proposal would make the age for buying cigarettes the same as for buying liquor, but it would not make it illegal for people under 21 to possess or smoke cigarettes.

Surveys suggest youth smoking has been declining in New York City, perhaps, some analysts say, because young people have been influenced by the public health campaigns and never taken it up to begin with.

In March, Mr. Bloomberg proposed legislation through the Council that he said would make New York the first city in the nation to force retailers to keep tobacco products hidden where customers could not see them. That proposal, he said, was meant to shield children from tobacco marketing and keep people from buying cigarettes on impulse.

But the latest proposals have also come amid some recent defeats in Mr. Bloomberg’s public health campaigns, like a reversal in court of the policy of putting graphic antismoking advertisements where cigarettes are sold, and another court reversal of a highly anticipated city ban on selling super-size sugary drinks at movie theaters, sports arenas and other establishments.

The smoking age is 18 in most of the country, but 19 in four states: Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey and Utah.

Some counties have also adopted 19, including Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. Needham, Mass., a suburb of Boston, also has raised its smoking age to 21.

Either completely ban them, or let them sell it as they want. If you're old enough to drive a car, you're old enough to drink or smoke.

Oh boy, raising a restriction which isn't effective at all (in my area atleast) is surely going to help.

I don't understand 'murrica.
In good old Germania, you can legally drink beer, wine etc. with 14 (as long as you're accompanied by your parents). And with 16, beer for everyone.

Same here, imo it's better to first get used to alcohol, and then get used to driving, rather than getting used to drinking alcohol legally while you're already driving around.

What's even better, in America, you can have sex for THREE YEARS before you're even allowed to drink a drop of alcohol. dafuq?

Also, how stupid do you have to be to think you can drive when drunk? Or not plan ahead? If I go out drinking, I make sure I either don't drink more than 1 beer, or get some transport which is driven by a sober person.

^I'm always the sober one, which is a pain. At least I know my friends and I aren't dying though.
Anyway, here's what's legal in my state (NSW) in Australia:
Age of Consent: Males 18; Females 16 (yes they're different. May have got them the wrong way around) (AusUni)
Alcohol Consumption: 16 in private property and accompanied by responsible adults. Cannot purchase alcohol @ 16 (AusUni)
18 you can buy alcohol (AusUni)
Driving:
L Plates @ 16 (Can't drive without someone on full licence in passenger seat. 0% BAC for Learner and Instructor, can't exceed 80km/H, minimum of 80 hours day driving, 40 night driving, and minimum of 1 year)
P1 Plates @ 17 (Can drive alone! 0% BAC, can't exceed 90km/H, must have for a minimum of 1 year. Cannot have more than one person between 16-24 in the car after 11pm)
P2 Plates @ 18 (Drive alone, 0% BAC, can't exceed 100/H, must have for a minimum of two years, can have whoever they want in the car at any time (although if max. 5 seats then max. 5 people, obviously xD)
Smoking: Can buy cigarettes at the age of 18, however everyone who's 16 and has 18+ year old friends gets them too.

Yeah I felt left out.
