SAN FRANCISCO—Apple Inc. dominated the global market for tablets in the third quarter amid limited competition for its iPad device, a situation that is likely to change in coming weeks.
Roughly 95% of all tablet computer shipments in the quarter were of the Cupertino, Calif., consumer electronics leader's tablet, according to a new study by Strategy Analytics Inc. The Boston-based research firm said the tablet computer shipments rose 26% from the previous quarter.
Google Inc.'s Android operating system represented just 2% of global tablet shipments that were made by generic device manufacturers. However, that percentage is expected to rise in the current quarter, as more models such as Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy Tab enter the market, the study said.
Apple has been selling its iPad touchscreen device since April with little competition from major competitors. Hewlett-Packard Co. plans to release tablets in the near future, along with display-maker Viewsonic Corp. Others, such as Research in Motion Ltd., have announced plans to release tablet devices sometime next year.
Sales of these new touchscreen tablets are expected to nearly triple to 54.8 million units in 2011, according to industry tracker Gartner Inc.
