A US woman was shot and injured at an Avatar screening during a gun battle scene in the movie, according to reports.
People who were at the New Mexico screening told local television station KOB they were initially unaware a real gunfight had broken out in the theatre.
"There were machine guns going off (in the movie) … I thought it was speakers popping," cinemagoer John Reynolds told the network.
“I didn't even know it was gunshots, until they turned on the lights."
The cinema was evacuated and police arrived at the theatre at 9.30pm on Saturday night.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was reportedly shot in the ankle and is recovering.
A police spokesperson said she only realised she had been shot when she attempted to stand up.
Surveillance footage obtained by police reportedly showed two men and one woman fleeing the scene after the shooting.
Ken Reynolds, another man who was watching the movie, said the shooter left their weapon in the theatre.
"I saw the gun ... it was a revolver," he said.
Police have reportedly questioned two men over the shooting and said they are not sure whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.
