The manager says: "Oh, they're nice people", and gives the clerk five dollars ($5) to split between three of them.
The clerk goes to each person, and gives them one dollar ($1) each. On the way down, pockets the reminding two dollars ($2) (Total: $5).

Now, they would of each payed nine dollars ($9 x 3) (Total: $27) and there is two dollars ($2) in the clerk's pocket (Total:29).
