Ludwigshafen, Germany - A teacher was stabbed to death in an attack at a vocational school in the German town of Ludwigshafen on Thursday, police said. A 23-year-old former student was overpowered and arrested by police who were called to the school after the alarm was raised at 1000 local time that a man had gone on the rampage.
The former student admitted under questioning that he was angry at the teacher for giving him poor marks, prosecutors later told a news conference.
Police found the 58-year-old teacher lying on the stairs to cellar, badly injured with a knife wound. Efforts to save him failed and he died at the scene.
Police chased the suspect, who was armed with a combat knife and firing shots from a starter pistol, before overpowering him while he was still in the school.
Nobody else was injured, police said.
Prosecutors said the man would appear before an investigating judge on Friday to face a possible charge of murder.
A large police contingent evacuated and searched the school complex, while pupils received primary counselling.
Initial images circulated on the internet showed crowds of pupils assembled outside the science and technology school, while messages about the attack proliferated on social networking site Twitter.
The attack came weeks before the first anniversary of a school massacre in the German town of Winnenden, in which a 17-year-old shot dead 15 people before turning the gun on himself.
