Actually that is not completely true. If you change the metal of on the ski lift to a metal which conducts heat pretty well you will be able to melt your way through the snow. You would not need to heat up the metal since it would just get the heat from the surrounding. It will take some time, but it will work. Considering the length of the lift, you'd need a MUCH bigger motor and more power to get those things moving through all that heavy snow.
