One-way trip to Mars could be yours for just $38

Have you ever wanted to drop everything and start over somewhere else? Do you have $38 and enjoy interplanetary travel? You're not alone.

According to a CNN report, more than 100,000 people have applied for a one-way trip to Mars through the Mars One Project, which seeks to colonize the planet with manned missions beginning in the year 2022.

If you want to be considered for the first mission, you have until the end of August to send in your application.

In the first two weeks of the application period, 78,000 people from around the world signed up.

"This is turning out to be the most desired job in history," Bas Lansdorp, Mars One Co-Founder and CEO said. "These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants."

Those selected for the first mission will take flight in September 2022 and get to Mars in April 2023, giving new meaning to the question, "Are we there yet?". Candidate will also have to take place in a lengthy training period which will last about seven years.

The selection process will end in 2015 and 28-40 candidates will make the final cut. Then an audience will select one of the training groups "to be the envoys of humanity to Mars," according to a Mars One press release.

While the Mars One Project claims that the journey and habitation of the planet is feasible, not everyone agrees.

An editorial by David Gobby in the Montreal Gazette called it "a disingenuous and unethical adventure in human manipulation and hype. The only vision it represents is an updated version of the greedy foresight of 19th-century industrialists and 21st-century media barons."

Mars One does say that it wants to fund the project -- which they estimate will cost $6 billion for the first mission -- by "making it the biggest media spectacle in history."

So while the mission to Mars may not actually succeed, it looks as if some new reality TV may be coming your way soon.
