Man arrested and jailed for having same name as wanted man. Gets $70k settlement
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Santa Fe County is paying a $70,000 settlement to a Rio Rancho man who was arrested and then jailed for several days after being mistaken for another man with the same name.
According to a lawyer for Anthony Ortiz, his client was arrested by a police officer in 2009 because a Santa Fe County arrest warrant included Ortiz's Social Security number.
The Albuquerque Journal reports the warrant was intended for another man sought who allegedly failed to appear in court.
