Jolicloud, the netbook OS that mixes web connectivity with desktop apps, is rolling out its 1.0 release, and there's a lot to like. Chief among the new stuff is a new, HTML5-based dashboard and synchronized, auto-updating, add-from-anywhere apps.

Jolicloud isn't an entirely browser-based netbook system, a la Chrome OS, but instead operates from a dashboard model filled with apps. Some of those apps can store local data, while others are entirely cloud-based. Jolicloud used to have a look based on Ubuntu's Netbook Remix OS, but now it's got its own sleek HTML5 looks, as shown above.

Also new and improved in Jolicloud 1.0 is the application handling. Apps you install are synced between all your Jolicloud systems, and apps stay automatically updated on your system. If you read about an app you'd love to try out while you're away from your Jolicloud system, you can log into your account through any HTML5-capable browser and add or remove apps, and see what's new and recommended by the Jolicloud team or your contacts.

If you're a newcomer to Jolicloud, you might end up downloading the "pre-final" 1.0 version of Jolicloud, but your upgrade should arrive in the very near future, and automatically, after installation. Early Jolicloud sign-ups should be getting their 1.0 upgrade soon, too, if not already.

Jolicloud is a free download, and can install on most netbooks, or on other systems as a separate partition. Refer to our previous post for Windows-based installation tips, or read up on how to install Jolicloud as a separate partition.
