Nicholas Longrich discovered a new dinosaur with a uniquely frilled skull. Once the discovering was done, he went out to a bar with a few paleontologist friends for a drinking / brainstorming session, to come up with a name. The result, is the mojoceratops.
“It was just a joke, but then everyone stopped and looked at each other and said, ‘Wait — that actually sounds cool,” Longrich told Science Daily. “I tried to come up with serious names after that, but Mojoceratops just sort of stuck.”
Mojoceratops perifania is a hippo sized herbivore that was related to the triceratops. The dinosaur, which lived about 75 million years ago, had a large bone frill above its head. The frill, along with the beers, resulted in its mojoceratops name.
Longrich says that the large frill was used to attract females, and scientifically, the name actually works very well for the dinosaur.
“This dinosaur probably used its frill to attract mates, so the name made sense.”
