A South Australian MP has called for state taxpayers to fund sex workers to service people with disabilities, arguing they should not be deprived of the joy of sex due to any disorder.
Kelly Vincent, a state MP from the Dignity for Disability party, will lobby to have sex work decriminalised, a necessary step before the state can pay for sex for the disabled, Adelaide Now reports.
"We need to create a culture within disability service provision that is accepting that many people ... with a disability are sexually active or have sexual desires," she said.
The MP said there must be some criteria to judge who is eligible for state-funded sex, but says her proposal would not mean an increase in government funding.
She argued some funds currently going to physical treatments could be diverted to sex services.
Ms Vincent said similar schemes are already underway in Scandinavia and they have proven beneficial.
Last August it was revealed the NSW government was facilitating trips to brothels for people with disabilities.
However, under the NSW government scheme those with disabilities pay for the sex services themselves but taxpayers provide the funds for carers to transport them to the bordellos and escort them home afterwards.
Ms Vincent's calls are echoed by the sex workers association Scarlet Alliance.
The association is screening a documentary in Adelaide today about a NSW sex worker and her experiences working with disabled clients.
"It's often a long time since someone (with a disability) has been touched in a sensual way," Adelaide sex worker and vice-president of the Scarlet Alliance, Ari Reid, was quoted as saying.
