But how does the upgrading work exactly? Can you upgrade your existing OS installation or you have to buy something... or what?

Well the specs of the 'new iPhone' are a LOT better, so I don't think you can use all those new features on the specs of a 3G iPhone.

The iPhone with operating system version 4 (iPhone OS 4) is still a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3Gs. I doubt a hardware update will be necessary.

A hardware update will probably come soon enough.
Better not increase the specs too much or you'll have iPhone 4G's with better specs than the iPad.
