10 Jobs that no longer exist today

Nowadays almost everything is done by a machine.
There was a time however that this was not the case.
Let’s take a look back at 10 jobs that used to exist and have now almost all vanished and are done by a machine today.

1. Bowling alley pinsetters

Today when you go bowling, the pins magically re-appear thanks to a wonderful machine behind the curtains.
In the old days however teenagers were hired for the job, and were paid very little

2. Switchboard operators

Switchboard operator would connect long-distance calls before modem technology rendered them obsolete.

3. Body snatchers

Yes you read that correctly, back in the old days ‘body snatchers’ were hired to remove corpses from graves for universities to use as cadavers for studies.

4. Entertainer for factory workers

As the title says, these guys’ job basically was entertaining the factory workers, they read thing such as union publications to the workers.

5. Knocker-upper

These people had only one job: ensuring that people would wake up on time for their jobs.
They would use sticks, clubs or pebbles to knock on clients’ windows and doors.

6. Ice Cutter

Nowadays we have modern refrigeration, before that people would rely on ice cutters to go on frozen lakes, cut ice into large pieces, and then deliver them to the people.

7. Listener for enemy aircraft

Before radar, troops had to rely on listening devices like these to focus and detect the sound of engines from a possible approaching aircraft.

8. Rat catcher

Rat catchers were mostly employed in Europe, their job was to control rat populations.

9. Lamp lighter

Before electric lamps, lamp lighters were needed to light street lamps, they used long poles for easier access. electric lamps were introduced

10. Milkman

Most people are still familiar with the term, but it has been a while since these guys were around. Back in the day people needed a milkman because milk couldn’t be properly stored at home (no good preservation techniques). That’s why the milk had to be delivered daily.
